Since deregulation of the electricity market carried out in Japan in April 2016, the number of new entries to the electricity retail business have increased, exceeding 679 newcomers in October 2020. One of them is New Power OITA, servicing a number of cities in the Kyushu region. Its market is considerably smaller than that of Kyushu Electric (known as “Kyuden”), which is the regional supply giant. With electricity retail aimed at low-voltage customers such as households, Kyuden has been a regional monopoly for many years. In the low-voltage market, New Power OITA as a startup is offering competitive prices and attractive services to both new and existing customers.
